Healthcare should come to the people who need it most.
Visiting Dental Hygiene brings preventive oral healthcare directly to seniors, veterans, individuals in recovery, people experiencing homelessness, homebound patients, schools, and other community settings throughout Massachusetts.
Together, we're removing barriers to care — one community, one patient, one smile at a time.
We believe preventive oral healthcare is not a privilege — it is an essential part of overall health and should be accessible to every member of our community, regardless of age, ability, income, or circumstance.
Our community impact
Hundreds of seniors, veterans, students, and individuals in recovery receiving care where they live and gather.
Access to preventive oral healthcare should never depend on where someone lives.
Every day, thousands of Massachusetts residents delay or go without preventive dental care because they face barriers such as:
- Limited mobility
- Transportation challenges
- Financial hardship
- Disabilities
- Recovery from substance use
- Housing instability
- Anxiety surrounding dental care
We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to receive preventive oral healthcare with comfort, dignity, and compassion.
Care that travels — to wherever care is hardest to reach.

The power of compassionate care
More than a dental cleaning: building trust, one conversation at a time.
When our team arrived at a local women's recovery residence, one resident quietly let us know that she wasn't interested in having her teeth cleaned. She was understandably anxious — it had been several years since she had last seen a dental professional.
Rather than trying to persuade her, one of our dental hygienists simply spent time talking with her throughout the day. She checked in periodically, listened to her concerns, and allowed trust to develop at the resident's own pace.
As the day was coming to a close, she approached our hygienist and said she was willing to let her "just take a look." During the exam, she mentioned that one of her teeth had been hurting. Our hygienist handed her a mirror and gently showed her the tartar buildup irritating her gums.
Holding the mirror in her own hand, she watched as years of buildup were slowly and carefully removed. "I can't believe all of that was on my tooth!" she exclaimed. Before long, she felt comfortable enough to complete her entire dental cleaning.
The woman who had been too nervous to sit in the chair just a few hours earlier left smiling from ear to ear — radiating pride, confidence, and relief.
Sometimes the most important thing we provide isn't a dental cleaning. Sometimes it's the trust that helps someone believe they can begin taking care of themselves again.
Trusted by the communities we serve.
"Visiting Dental Hygiene has become an invaluable resource for our seniors. When I transitioned to a new Council on Aging, one of my very first priorities was making sure this service would be available to the seniors in my new community as well. The impact VDH has on the health and well-being of older adults is truly remarkable."
"Visiting Dental Hygiene has become an essential part of the care we provide to our clients. The impact we've seen has been so significant that we've committed to covering the cost of care for clients who aren't eligible for reimbursement, ensuring that no one is turned away because of insurance."
"In Good Health is proud to partner with Visiting Dental Hygiene to bring preventive oral healthcare directly to older adults in our communities. VDH removes barriers to care and helps seniors maintain their health, independence, and quality of life."
"At High Point Treatment Center, we recognize that oral health is an important part of overall health and recovery. Visiting Dental Hygiene has become an invaluable partner by bringing preventive dental care directly to our clients, removing barriers that often prevent individuals from accessing these essential services. Support for oral health increases overall health and increases self-esteem. We've seen the impact of this partnership firsthand, which is why we're proud to support VDH's mission and help ensure our clients—and our staff—have access to high-quality preventive oral healthcare."
"Our partnership with Visiting Dental Hygiene has continued to grow stronger over the years. The relationships our participants have built with Emma and the VDH team have created a truly meaningful experience. Each week, they take great pride in assembling the dental hygiene bags used during VDH's mobile clinics, knowing their work helps bring care to people who need it most. It's a partnership built on purpose, inclusion, connection, and community."

Get involved
A hygienist saw a gap. She filled it with a van and a calling.
VDH began in 2013 with a simple, stubborn idea: if people couldn't get to dental care, dental care should go to them. Today we're a Massachusetts nonprofit serving thousands of patients each year — with the same belief, scaled.
Together, we're creating healthier communities.
Every partnership. Every volunteer. Every sponsor. Every donation. Every patient. Together, we're ensuring that preventive oral healthcare reaches the people who need it most.

A small team. A vast reach.
Our clinicians, board, and volunteers share one belief: oral health is health. Together we partner with shelters, recovery programs, senior centers, schools, and veterans organizations across the Commonwealth.
